Unsubscribes & Viruses Unexpected Unsubscribes Over the past weeks we've received many reports of people being unsubscribed from HeroicStories -- often multiple times. If you recieve a message indicating you've been "successfully" unsubscribed from HeroicStories, and you did not in fact unsubscribe, then you are almost certainly the victim of a virus. The virus is not on your machine, nor is it on ours, and that's what makes this scenario so hard to resolve. Some third party has a virus, and that virus is attempting to spread. This particular type of virus spreads by reading addresses out of someone's address book, and using them to send email to, and to forge the "From:" line. So what's happened is this: our automated unsubscribe processor at "leave-heroicstories (at) lyris.net" has received a bogus email that looks like it came from you, even though you did not send it. What can we do? Unfortunately very little. To continue recieving HeroicStories, we recommend, even request, that you simply resubscribe. Since you know your current email address is in an infected machine's address book, if you have the opportunity try using a different email address - perhaps a free Hotmail or Yahoo account. (You can read more about how viruses can pretend to be you, even if you're not infected, here.) Missing Issues Everyone subscribed is at least sent every issue. However, you may not receive every issue. If you've definitely missed an issue, there are several possible causes.
What to do? Well, to begin with it's always safe to re-subscribe, even if you're not sure if you've been unsubscribed. Just use the subscribe form below. It may also be helpful to keep two addresses subscribed to HeroicStories, some of us here do that, in case there's a delivery failure to one address. You may be able to "whitelist" the address HeroicStories comes from: that is, ask your ISP to allow our mail through. (Exactly how will vary depending on your ISP, or other software.) The address to whitelist is: heroicstories-admin@lyris.net. Preach the anti-virus gospel! Make sure that you and your friends and acquaintances all run up to date anti-virus software, and practice "safe computing" -- 90% of the time that simply means never opening an attachment unless you're absolutely positive you know that it's safe. Consider subscribing to our RSS feed. It bypasses email and is imune from viruses. Have patience with publishers such as HeroicStories who are legitimately trying to send you email. We're neither the cause of, nor do we have a real solution for, most of these problems.
And finally, spread the HeroicStories word! We're impacted by all this because we lose subscribers with every new email virus -- people who wish they still were subscribed. Spreading the word and getting more people to subscribe to HeroicStories is the only way we will survive this storm. Thank you so much... we're all in this together.
